Your steps to teaching

Step 1: Have industry experience

Trainers and Assessors (TAFE teachers) have experience working in their industry and a current industry qualification.

Step 2: Get a teaching qualification

Complete a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122). This course teaches you how to plan and deliver training, support adult learners and assess skills and knowledge. Most people complete it in around 12 months.

Step 3: Get support and find your role

We can help you understand the requirements, explore available roles and plan your pathway into teaching.

Recognition of your experience

You may be able to get recognition of prior learning (RPL) for your existing skills.

If you have overseas qualifications, these may also be recognised.

For more information, get in touch.

Support available

Support is available to help you:

  • complete your teaching qualification
  • transition into teaching
  • build confidence in your new role.

Financial help may be available through the TAE Support Package for Students. This package offers scholarships, subsidised training and travel assistance for eligible Queenslanders. Find out more about the TAE Support Package for Students.

Not sure if you’re ready?

You don’t need to have everything figured out before you start. Many people move into teaching after working in their industry.

We can help you understand your options.
