TAFE Queensland engineering teacher Brian Siebert has found more than just a new career in teaching, he’s found a genuine passion.

After a career spanning fitting and turning, applied technologies and defence programs, Brian made the move to teaching in 2023. What began as a natural next step to share his industry knowledge, became something more meaningful, as he discovered the impact he could have on others, including fellow veterans.

“Some of our veterans have never touched a lathe, never welded, never done any design work before,” Brian said.

“By the end of the course, they’ve created something of their own, something useful. That’s the moment that gets me every time.”

His transition into teaching has given him the opportunity to combine hands-on technical skills with mentoring and problem-solving.

“We’re trying to bring trades into the 21st century,” Brian said.

“That means embracing new tools, new technology, and helping students see how all of these skills connect.”

At the Townsville Trade Training Centre, Brian teaches a diverse mix of students, from apprentices to those looking to change careers. His approach reflects not only his industry experience, but also a genuine enthusiasm for helping people find their path.

“Every student learns differently,” Brian said.

“Some need visuals, some need to get hands-on straight away. I work with each person to find what clicks. When it does, you can see their whole outlook change.”

For Brian, the most fulfilling part of the job is seeing students grow in confidence and capability.

“When someone walks in here with no background, no confidence, and walks out knowing they can build something or fix something or program a solution – that’s the real reward,” he said.

“That’s why I teach.”

Recognised for his innovation and impact, the 2025 Queensland Training Awards VET Teacher of the Year (North Queensland) is a strong advocate for others considering a similar path.

Brian’s journey shows that teaching is more than a career change. It’s a chance to follow your passion, share your skills, and make a lasting difference.
