CQUniversity’s Educational Team Leader – Electrical, Kirsty O’Regan, has been a dedicated TAFE teacher for 18 years and is passionate about inspiring others to pursue careers in trades and teaching.
Rockhampton-based Kirsty started as an apprentice in the mining industry at a time when it was uncommon for women to enter the trades.
“It wasn’t a typical choice for women back then but my parents were incredibly supportive,” Kirsty said.
“I’ve always loved working with my hands, staying active, and solving problems.”
Kirsty’s career began in heavy industry, working on draglines, wash plants and control panels.
Over the years, she gained experience across mining, commercial, and domestic sectors but her passion for teaching eventually led her to TAFE.
“I looked to become a teacher because I wanted to find a way to be closer to my family while still actively engaging in my trade, which I love and do not want to give up,” Kirsty said.
“I also wanted to teach future generations of students, sharing the knowledge I have gained.
“Additionally, I hope to encourage and support other women, as I know from my own experience working in a male-dominated industry that this can sometimes be challenging and I felt my own personal experiences would have made me a little bit more approachable.”
Kirsty encouraged anyone interested in becoming a vocational education and training teacher to go for it.
“You’ll learn a lot about yourself, and you’ll be helping the next generation of tradies gain the skills they need to thrive.
“I can say it’s pretty family-friendly too, making it easier to juggle work and home life so if you’re even a little curious, give it a try, you might just love it.”
Kirsty’s story is a testament to the rewarding career opportunities in trades and the vital role TAFE teachers play in shaping the next generation of skilled professionals.
