Fifteen years ago, Barry Peek used his electrical expertise to help rebuild hospitals after the Christchurch earthquake.

Today, he’s helping build the next generation of electricians as a TAFE teacher at CQUniversity in Rockhampton.

With nearly 40 years of industry experience, Barry’s career has spanned telecommunications, SCADA systems, medical equipment repairs, and traffic signal installations.

After completing his electrical apprenticeship Barry moved to New Zealand, where he worked as an electrician and registered electrical inspector for 16 years.

His skills were put to the test in 2011 following the Christchurch earthquake where he worked on major rebuild projects including hospitals and community clinics.

Barry’s passion for training apprentices emerged when he supported his son through his heavy diesel apprenticeship.

“I found helping apprentices rewarding and wanted to get more involved in their training,” he said.

“I then became an apprentice workbook assessor in New Zealand before relocating to Rockhampton in 2017 where he joined CQUniversity as a TAFE electrical teacher.

“CQUniversity supported me every step of the way, covering my Training and Assessment qualification and mentoring me throughout the process. It was a win-win.”

Now, Barry shares his wealth of experience with students, teaching them not only technical skills but also the importance of safety and respect for electricity.

“If you want to move off the tools and contribute to the next generation of workers, vocational teaching could be the perfect fit,” he said.

Barry’s story highlights the rewarding opportunities available to those ready to inspire the future of trades.
