With over 40 years of industry experience across the civilian and defence sectors in light, medium, and heavy vehicle work, Mark Thomas has a unique breadth of knowledge.

He sees this as a great resource for him to draw on when teaching students concepts with varying examples related to their space in the industry.

Mark has extensive experience as a TAFE teacher, starting in 2011 in Victoria before taking his skills to Western Australia, then Queensland.

Mark’s qualifications showcase the broad experience he has collected through his time in the ADF and the automotive industry, holding the Certificate III in Heavy Road Transport, Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology, Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, and Certificate II in Automotive Air Conditioning.

He teaches a variety of automotive students across apprenticeships, pre-apprenticeships, and Career Tasters and loves his teaching career.

“One of the best aspects of being a TAFE teacher is being able to stay connected to your trade while getting off the tools after many years, giving your body a break,” Mark said.

“Seeing students grasp new concepts and grow in confidence never gets old, and we’re constantly learning ourselves as new technology emerges and we work to stay current.

“My advice for anyone thinking about transitioning from their trade into teaching? Go for it. Pass your knowledge onto the students and be passionate about teaching.

“Your passion and your knowledge is what they thrive on.”

ADF veterans across Queensland are being encouraged to consider TAFE teaching as the next step of their civilian careers like Mark did.
